Welcome to the web page for the
Tenth International Symposium on Double-Stranded RNA Viruses
This is the tenth in a series of triennial meetings aimed at reviewing the progress and future directions in the field of double-stranded RNA viruses. The meeting continues the tradition of being hosted by different countries in exciting and exotic locations of great natural beauty and interest. The goal of bringing together the best researchers in this field has always been achieved in previous meetings, and this should be no exception. An emphasis on encouraging attendance by both senior researchers and new, younger contributors is a feature.
This is the first time that this meeting has been held “down under” in Australasia, and it gives us great pleasure to invite you to attend this meeting.
Barbara Coulson and John Taylor

3rd ASM Conference on Salmonella: Biology, Pathogenesis & Prevention
October 5 - 9, 2009, Aix en Provence, France
Conference Organizers:
Ferric Fang
University of Washington
Richard Strugnell
University of Melbourne
Olivia Steele-Mortimer
NIH Rocky Mountain Laboratories
Duncan Maskell
University of Cambridge
Stéphane Méresse
Université de la Méditerranée, Marseilles
Conference Scope:
The 3rd International Conference on Salmonella will comprehensively integrate recent developments in subject areas ranging from the basic biology of Salmonella to genomics, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and disease prevention. Salmonella infections continue to cause substantial morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Foodborne outbreaks occur with regularity, multiple serovars cause major economic losses in livestock, and the co-existence of Salmonella and HIV infection in the developing world causes more than a million deaths each year. This conference will bring the world’s leading Salmonella experts to beautiful and historic Aix-en-Provence to provide a holistic appreciation of the field and discuss new strategies to ameliorate the burden of Salmonella-associated illness.
Preliminary Session Topics:
SESSION 1: Evolution & Genomics (incl. Phages)
SESSION 2: Genetics & Physiology
SESSION 3: Epidemiology & Clinical Aspects (incl. Antibiotic-Resistance)
SESSION 4: Animal Infections & Food Safety
SESSION 5 & 6: Pathogenesis (incl. Systems Biology, Molecular & Cell Biology)
SESSION 7: Immunology & Vaccines

Rationale: This international meeting is designed to bring together approximately 75 motivated/innovative Africa scientists with another 75 leading researchers and their teams from other countries working on basic science and areas related to the improvement of African agriculture. This international arena will allow dynamic interactions to discuss cutting edge research issues and promote science, education and policy issues related to Africa. This meeting is designed to address key issues by examining existing plant science knowledge, possible applications and development of new technologies, together with their use for improving crop performance in Africa. The need to enhance education in novel areas of plant research and biotechnology that might provide suitable solutions for Africa will also be addressed.
Our key aim is to assist the participation of African scientists in this dynamic interaction. We therefore encourage African researchers with an interest to offer papers/posters. We will use these as a basis for selection and we aim to offer a contribution of their funding to all selected African participants.’
General aims: This three-day international symposium is designed to bring together scientists from Africa, Europe and the USA to examine how new advances in plant science research and developing technologies can be used to the benefit of African agriculture. The symposium will present recent advances in plant science research and current views on innovations required for the development of agriculture in Africa, as well as analysis of how education may be enhanced to advance uptake of novel technologies. The meeting will bring together equal numbers of plant scientists, biotechnologists, agronomists, traditional breeders and educators from Africa and the rest of the world in order to discuss the role of novel, dynamic and relevant technologies and their applications in agriculture. In this way we aim to improve interactions between labs in Africa and other countries in research and education. In addition, this meeting will provide tools for education. Videos and podcasts arising from this meeting will be linked directly to the AAB and Rothamsted websites.

Acrylamide, in its monomeric form, is a neurotoxin and a probable carcinogen. Its presence in cooked foods was first reported in 2002 and concentrations in excess of 1 mg per kg (1000 parts per billion) have been reported in a variety of potato- and cereal-based products such as crisps, chips (French fries), roast and baked potatoes, bread, breakfast cereals and biscuits. Acrylamide is formed as a result of the Maillard reaction, which involves the thermal degradation of amino acids in the presence of reducing sugars. While this reaction imparts desirable qualities such as color and flavor to food, in the case of asparagine it also results in the formation of acrylamide. The major precursors for acrylamide formation, therefore, are free asparagine and reducing sugars.
International food monitoring agencies, in collaboration with industry, have put forward strategies for modifying processing methods to reduce dietary acrylamide. However, many of these methods limit the extent to which the Maillard reaction occurs, and while they result in a reduction of acrylamide, they also compromise the color and flavor of the end-product. Research in this area is therefore ongoing. However, there are anecdotal reports from the food industry that this approach is reaching the limit of what can be achieved and that alternative or complementary strategies need to be developed. Attention is therefore turning to improving the raw material by reducing the levels of sugars and/or free asparagine and thereby the risk of acrylamide formation.
This two-day focussed meeting follows a successful meeting held in 2006. It will examine the acrylamide issue from genetics and agronomy through to food processing.
Presentations and posters from this Conference will be produced together in a volume of the Aspects of Applied Biology series. Copies will be available to delegates at the Conference. Abstracts of papers can be submitted by sending us the form on the call for papers PDF, or online via our web site at http://www.aab.org.uk. Click on ABSTRACTS in the left-hand column, then the title of the Conference. Once you have registered as a user you can upload your details. Please indicate if your offer is for a poster or a platform presentation.
